Stratified Epithelial Tissues : Stratified epithelium has more than one layer.
Stratified epithelium Classified according to the cell shape of the superficial layer into :
* Stratified Epithelial Tissues
1- Stratified Squamous Epithelial Tissue
2- Stratified cuboidal Epithelial Tissue
3- Stratified columnar Epithelial Tissue
4- transitional Epithelial Tissue
Stratified Squamous Epithelium : Multiple layers of cells.
- Basal cells are columnar (don’t say simple columnar) with basal oval nuclei.
- Intermediate cells are polygonal with central rounded nuclei.
- Superficial cells are flat with flattened nuclei.
Found in:
- Keratinized: with a layer of keratin on the surface, Example of sites:skin
- Non-keratinized: without a layer of keratin on the surface,Example of sites: esophagus.
The kidney consists of an outer cortex and an inner medulla. In the cortex there are round structures called glomeruli which are surrounded by the Bowman s capsule.
Transitional Epithelial Tissue
( Urothelium)
Many layers of specialized cells that can increase membrane area when stretched and contain extra membrane when relaxed. - Basal cells are columnar. - Intermediate cells are polygonal. - Surface cells large cuboidal with convex free surface.
